Indeed underdstanding the story of Tashahhud helps focus more. Especially when recited slowly. Sometimes when I find myself reciting so fast that my tongue gets knoted I know I'm doing it all wrong, I ask refuge in God from Shaytan and resume reciting slowly trying the imagine the events of the story, and in the case of the quran verses, I try to understand the meaning as if I am hearing it for the first time.
